Attributed to Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) Italian, Murano Art Glass Bowl. Likely made in the 1950s during his collaboration with Venini, the sommerso bollicine form has a rounded bottom and squared top, with gold leaf speckled throughout the red body.

Italian architect and designer Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) translated his deep appreciation for regionalism, history, and craftsmanship into highly celebrated glass, furniture, and architectural creations. Though he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, his refusal to take the government’s licensing exam meant he was barred from using the professional title “Architetto” and was instead referred to as “Professore.” Much of his early design career was spent in Murano collaborating with legendary glassmakers MVM Cappellin and Venini, where his minimalist, tradition-honoring techniques culminated in historic vessels that now command hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction. He eventually entered the industrial design sphere in the 1960s, serving as president of the Gavina company and producing iconic furniture pieces like the Doge table and Cornaro sofa. While he spent decades teaching drawing and interior decoration in Venice, Scarpa also executed ambitious global architectural and landscape commissions that were heavily influenced by Venetian and Japanese cultures. Following his tragic death from a fall down a concrete staircase in Sendai, Japan, he was buried wrapped in linen sheets like a medieval knight within the walls of his own masterful Brion Tomb design.
