Bob Ross (October 29, 1942 – July 4, 1995) was an American painter, art instructor, and television personality best known for hosting the beloved PBS series The Joy of Painting, where he taught viewers how to create landscapes using his signature wet-on-wet technique. Famous for his calm voice, encouraging demeanor, and the phrase “happy little trees,” Ross made painting accessible and enjoyable for millions, emphasizing creativity over perfection. Before his television career, he served in the U.S. Air Force, and later trained under painter Bill Alexander, whose methods influenced his style. Ross’s gentle philosophy and approachable teaching style have left a lasting cultural legacy, continuing to inspire new generations of artists long after his passing.
