Thekla Hathaway Hammond was born in Los Angeles, California in 1940. She received her Masters of Fine Arts degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1975. Prior to moving to San Francisco in the early 1980s, she worked at the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum, designing and installing the Marine Hall, and subsequently, taught at both Santa Barbara City College and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. After marrying Stephen Hammond in 1986 they moved to Berkeley where he designed and helped her build her own art studio. She had exhibits at the Natural Museum of History, the California College of Arts & Crafts, and the Museum of Art and History in Santa Cruz, in addition to numerous Los Angeles galleries. She is still represented in San Francisco by the Tom Luttrell Gallery, Cheryl Haines, and Toomey-Tourell, and in Oaxaca, Mexico she was represented by Galeria Quetzalli. She also collaborated with other painters and with a composer to create unique pieces combining visual and auditory art. Thekla passed away in Berkeley in 2017.
