Attrib. Duncan McFarlane (1834-1871) United Kingdom, Oil on Board. Portrait of the Brig Swan in 3 positions. The swan was engaged in the New York - Liverpool trade in the 1850's. She was a merchant ship hut painted with false gunports. Like many other painters of ship portraits, many of McFarlanes paintings are unsigned. However they have characteristics that identify them. The excellent detail, color and overall crispness are all characteristic of McFarlanes work. The bow has a finely painted figurehead of a Swan. The name Swan is crisply executed to the rear of the figurehead. The shadowing of the sails is also a hallmark of McFarlanes technique. The fluttering of the sail on the mainmast and the gull in the right corner are other typical trademarks. Overall Size: 25 x 38 in. Sight Size: 20 x 39 in. #1425
