Asian Bronze Vahana Rider on Rooster. Bronze statue depicting a warrior god astride a rooster.
Size: 4 1/2 x 1 3/4 x 8 in.
In Hindu and Buddhist traditions, certain deities are depicted with a vahana (sacred vehicle) in the form of a rooster, symbolizing vigilance, courage, and the triumph of light over darkness. Most notably, the war god Kartikeya (also known as Skanda or Murugan) is sometimes shown with a rooster emblem, called the seval kodi (rooster banner), or in rarer regional depictions riding the bird itself, representing his role as a youthful warrior whose energy dispels ignorance. The rooster, with its crowing at dawn, serves as a cosmic reminder of awakening and the victory of spiritual truth. Sculptures and bronzes of such vahana riders, though less common than those featuring more traditional mounts like the peacock, reflect local artistic interpretations and devotional practices, blending symbolic potency with striking visual form.
