Arti & Mestieri (meaning "Arts & Crafts") was founded in 1977 in the small town of Montevarchi, five miles south of Florence, Italy. It was created by two design students who wanted to create functional products that incorporated Surrealist and Modernist elements. Due to the ongoing political unrest in the country resources were scarce, so for the first ten years their home furnishings were created primarily from ceramics, glass, and wood. In the mid 80s the company acquired a nearby iron workshop, and began to focus more and more on their best-selling item, clocks. In 1990 they developed a process of laser-cutting to create even more definition and unusual shapes in their clock faces, and shortly after they were contracted by the International division of the Walt Disney Company to make a series of animation-themed clocks that introduced them to a much wider audience. By 1995 the company had opened retail locations in Milan, Madrid, and Paris, with their latest store opening in Tokyo in 2023. Their pieces, instantly recognizable by their intriguing shapes and simple colors, have become highly collectible, particularly from earlier in their history when production was more limited but no less complicated.
