Arthur Feudel was born in Harthau, Germany in 1857. In 1869 the family moved to Chemnitz, then in 1871 to Meissen as his father attempted to find work. He opened his own laundry service, and sent both Arthur and his brother Constantin to apprentice at a local porcelain manufactory. Arthur enrolled in the Art Academy in Munich in 1877, studying with Gyula Benczur and Ludwig von Loffts. Two years later he took classes at the Academy of Arts in Dresden with Fedor Flinzer. In 1880, Arthur married Katharina Merkel, with whom he had a daughter, and for the next five years they traveled to Leipzig, Berlin, and finally Paris, France, where he explored numerous museums to analyze the art. In 1885 he and his wife immigrated to the United States, where he finally settled in New York and worked full time as a painter and illustrator. His flower paintings and portraits brought them recognition and prosperity, and his first exhibition was at the Chicago Art Institute in 1887. The following year he held three more, at the Boston Art Club, the National Academy of Design, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1888 Kathatina died, and in 1891 he married the painter Alma Leila Wright, who helped him become an American citizen the next year, although she divorced him in 1901, citing Cruelty and Non-Support. In 1902 he traveled to Katwijk in Holland to study for six months, but became ill and was almost bedridden for over two years, accumulating debt and finding himself unable to return to the United States. He became a member of the company Artie et Amicitiae in Amsterdam, and threw himself into his work to try to rebuild his fortunes. Arthur’s best known watercolors of coasts and landscapes come from the Netherlands, but his work from the United States shows his evolving style and the many influences of his travels. In 1909 he finally returned to the United States with the help of the American Consulate, but he never completely recovered his health and relapsed frequently. On a visit to Katwijk in 1929 he died, leaving behind an immense body of work despite his many difficult circumstances.
Painting overall good. Frame commensurate with age.
