Arne Hovmand-Olsen was born on November 16th, 1919 into a farming family in Egebjerg on Funen, the third largest island in Denmark. In 1938, after impressing his father with his self-taught carving skills, he began his apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker at the Sibast Furniture Factory under Peder Olsen Sibast in Aarhus. Hovmand-Olsen dreamed of designing his own furniture, and applied to study design at Aarhus Technical School in 1941. Together with Niels Otto Møller he developed a sleek dining chair shape which quickly became a classic model for other Danish companies. After graduating in 1944 he opened his own studio, where he created furniture inspired by simple Scandinavian designs and primarily made of teak. He experimented with architecture, as well as the visual arts, but dedicated most of his life to crafting furniture in addition to pioneering new distribution channels and methods for his work. His furniture sold well in Denmark, but the majority of it was exported via the manufacturing partnership Jutex, with the United States as their largest market. Hovmand-Olsen ultimately designed over 50 different pieces of furniture, most of them chairs but including a number of tables, sofas, and cabinets. The majority of his pieces were first built by hand in his studio and then mass produced at Mogens Kold Møbelfabrik in Kerteminde, although he often completed commissions for other manufacturers in Denmark like Alf Juul Rasmussen, J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, and Bramin. In 1970 he was forced to close his studio due to illness, and he passed away in 1989, still heralded today as a major contributor to the Danish Modern Movement.
