Armand Pierre Arman, born Armand Fernandez in Nice, France in 1928, was a French-American artist known for his assemblages of found objects. Introduced to art by his father, he studied in Nice and at the Ecole du Louvre, focusing on art, philosophy, and archaeology. Inspired by Kurt Schwitters, he began making stamp imprints (cachets) in 1954 and exhibited in London and Paris by 1956. After a Paris gallery misspelled his name in 1958, he adopted “Arman” as his artist name and later became a U.S. citizen in 1973. In 1959, he created his Accumulations—clusters of everyday objects placed without order—and co-founded the Nouveau Réalisme movement with Yves Klein. After Klein’s death, Arman spent more time in New York, had major retrospectives in 1964, and later focused on large public works like Long Term Parking (1982), a 65-foot tower of cars near Paris. He maintained studios in Paris and New York until his death in 2005.
