Arlene Adams Schuyler was born in Kingston, Pennsylvania on August 3rd, 1927. While attending public school in nearby Forty Fort she was first introduced to art by her third grade teacher, and became particularly interested in floral paintings. She took courses at the Pratt Institute in New York City, graduating in 1949. She spent the next several years traveling south along the East coast, seeking inspiration and exploring the different foliage as the climate zones changed. In 1955 she married Army Captain Francis “Frank” Schuyler in Miami, and they moved to Munich, Germany four years later. She attended classes at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg, Vienna, and the next year she and Frank adopted an orphaned brother and sister. The military moved Frank around frequently, and the family lived throughout Europe, including in Naples, Italy and Nice, France, where Arlene was able to meet Pablo Picasso, one of her idols. The experience encouraged her to pursue her art, and when the family was sent back to the United States she began to paint landscapes. At first stationed in San Francisco, they finally moved to Boca Raton, Florida when Frank was discharged in 1971, where her interest in flowers was revived. She published a comprehensive book on flowers called “South Florida Natives” in 1982, and illustrated all the varieties within herself. She was a lifetime member of the Boca Raton Garden Club and the Boca Raton Historical Society, frequently contributing botanical watercolors to charity auctions and benefits. Along with the 1984 novel “A Land Remembered” by Patrick D. Smith, her paintings are considered pivotal in revitalizing interest in the lush untamed wilderness of the Florida interior, along with efforts to preserve the Everglades and other unique ecological systems throughout the state. Arlene passed away on January 1st, 2023, preceded by her husband, and was laid to rest beside him in Arlington National Cemetery, leaving behind a legacy of vivid colorful art capturing hundreds of beautiful flowers and vistas.
