Antonio Guansé Brea (1926-2008) was a Spanish-Catalan painter born in Tortosa, Catalonia, in 1926, whose career became closely associated with the postwar artistic scene of Paris. After studying art in Barcelona and participating in avant-garde circles such as the “Ciclos Experimentales de Arte Nuevo,” he moved to Paris in 1953 on a French government scholarship and settled there permanently the following year. Influenced by figures such as Pablo Picasso, Guansé developed a distinctive style that evolved from expressive landscapes and scenes of fishermen and peasants to a vibrant form of “New Figuration,” balancing abstraction and representation. Human figures, urban life, and emotional symbolism became central themes in his work, characterized by bold color, simplified forms, and a poetic sensibility rooted in his early love of literature. Over his lifetime he held more than one hundred solo exhibitions, received the Paris Critics’ Prize in 1962, and became associated with the School of Paris. He died in Paris in 2008, leaving works held in major public collections in France and Spain.
