Rushlights were a form of inexpensive, early lighting used in Britain and parts of Europe from the 16th through the 19th centuries, made by soaking the pith of rush plants in fat or grease to create a simple, slow-burning candle. Often held in iron or wooden holders, rushlights provided modest illumination for households that could not afford beeswax or tallow candles, and were commonly used for reading, cooking, or general domestic tasks. The soft, flickering light produced by rushlights was weak and uneven, but their accessibility and ease of production made them an essential feature of everyday life in rural and urban homes alike. Today, rushlights are appreciated both as historical artifacts and as examples of practical, resourceful lighting before modern advances in illumination.
