Antique Wooden Chinese Rice Measure.

Chinese rice measures traditionally refer to a variety of standardized containers and units used to measure rice, reflecting the grain’s central role in Chinese agriculture and daily life. Historically, units like the dou (approximately 10 liters) and sheng (about one-tenth of a dou) were used to quantify rice for trade, taxation, and cooking. Alongside these volume measures, physical measuring tools—often wooden or bamboo boxes—were carefully crafted to ensure accuracy and fairness in markets. These measures were not only practical but also deeply embedded in social and economic systems, symbolizing abundance and sustenance, and they remain a cultural reference point in modern times when discussing traditional Chinese foodways.
