In much East Asian sculpture and pottery, the Shakyamuni Buddha’s standing positions often represent his readiness to help and teach, featuring different symbolic hand gestures (or mudras), and a serene expression. Common stances include his right hand raised in the Abhaya mudra (fearlessness) or lowered with palm outward in the Varada mudra (boon-giving). He may also stand with his left hand holding the edge of his robe or in the Dharmachakra mudra, which signifies the turning of the Wheel of Law. His standing position frequently differentiates him from his counterpart Akshobhya in contemporaneous regional variants of Buddhism, who is rarely ever portrayed standing but instead sitting, representing his focus on meditation and stillness.
Lost left hand.
