Stained glass is a centuries-old art form that involves arranging pieces of colored glass into decorative patterns or images, often held together by strips of lead and supported by a rigid frame. Originating in ancient times but flourishing during the Gothic period, particularly in cathedrals and churches, stained glass windows were used both to enhance interior spaces with radiant light and to depict biblical stories for largely illiterate congregations. The technique combines craftsmanship and artistic vision, with glass colored by adding metallic salts during its manufacture and then painted or etched for detail. Over time, stained glass expanded beyond religious settings to include secular and modern architectural uses, as well as fine art installations. Today, it remains a vibrant medium, blending tradition with contemporary innovation.
