Antique Spanish Colonial School Santos Carved Wood Angel. Antique Spanish Colonial carved wood Santos statue depicting an angel or a saint, possibly Saint Michael.

Original polychrome finish. Some loss to paint throughout.

Spanish Colonial angel and saint statues are devotional figures created during the colonial period in Latin America, roughly from the 16th to 19th centuries, as part of Catholic missionary efforts. These sculptures, often made from wood, polychrome, and sometimes adorned with gilding or glass eyes, depict Christian saints and celestial beings in dramatic, emotive poses. Blending European religious iconography with Indigenous artistic traditions, they embody a unique cultural fusion—sometimes featuring local materials, facial features, or clothing styles. Revered both as sacred objects and historical artworks, these statues remain powerful symbols of faith, colonization, and cultural hybridity.
