In Russian Orthodox iconography, Saint John the Baptist—known as the Forerunner—is portrayed with striking austerity and prophetic intensity, reflecting his role as the last prophet and the one who prepared the way for Christ. He is typically depicted as a gaunt, ascetic figure with wild hair and a cloak of camel’s hair, often holding a scroll inscribed with a call to repentance and a slender cross-topped staff. A frequent feature in icons is the inclusion of his severed head on a platter, symbolizing his martyrdom under Herod. In the Deësis tier of iconostases, he stands to Christ’s left, interceding on behalf of humanity. His imagery evokes themes of spiritual vigilance, humility, and the stark boundary between the Old and New Covenants, making him one of the most powerful and enigmatic figures in Orthodox visual tradition.
