Russian icons depicting God the Father are rare and theologically complex, reflecting the Orthodox Church’s careful approach to portraying the divine. Traditionally, Eastern Orthodoxy emphasizes depicting Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the Holy Spirit in symbolic form, while direct representations of God the Father were often discouraged to avoid violating iconographic canons rooted in the commandment against graven images. However, from the late medieval period onward, especially under Western influence, some Russian icons began to depict God the Father as an elderly, bearded man—often enthroned or shown within a mandorla, representing divine glory. These images, though unofficial and sometimes controversial, sought to visualize the unknowable through human metaphor, blending scriptural vision with artistic reverence.
