Renaissance Revival is a term often applied to architecture (sometimes referred to as “Neo-Renaissance”) during the 19th Century that was neither Greek Revival nor Gothic Revival but instead drew inspiration from a wide range of classic Italian modes. The term can be somewhat broad and includes styles that can be identified as Mannerist or Baroque, as well as those influenced by Renaissance humanism. The divergent forms of Renaissance architecture in different parts of Europe, particularly in France and Italy, has added to the difficulty of defining and recognizing Neo-Renaissance architecture. An eclectic blending of past styles, which the architect selected on the whims of his patrons, the revival style separates itself from the true Renaissance era where there was a division of labor between the architect/designer who envisioned the exterior of a home and the artisans who decorated and arranged the interior. It was also at this time that the concept of “furnishing styles” first manifested itself, allowing distinctions to be made between interior rooms and external appearances, and indeed between the various rooms themselves. Specific pieces of furniture could be mixed and matched, rather than an entire room conforming to a single style or aesthetic. Numerous revivals of various eras have occurred since, sometimes in the most simple of touches and homages and other times in full-blown reproductions, determined by location, environment, and socio-economic trends.
