Founded in Queens, New York, in 1901 by former Tiffany Glass artisans Martin Bach Sr. and Thomas Johnson, the Quezal Art Glass and Decorating Company became one of America’s premier producers of Art Nouveau glassware. The firm derived its name from the brilliant, iridescent plumage of the Central American quetzal bird, which served as the direct aesthetic inspiration for its vibrant designs. Quezal gained widespread renown for its exquisite hand-blown lamp shades, vases, and decorative vessels, which were characterized by luminous metallic lusters, delicate pulled-feather motifs, and organic, curving forms. Though its high craftsmanship rivaled contemporaries like Tiffany and Steuben, the firm struggled financially following the death of Bach in 1921. By 1924, art glass production ceased as key artisans departed, yet surviving Quezal pieces remain highly prized works of early 20th Century decorative art.
