Peter and Ann Bateman were prominent late 18th Century London silversmiths who continued the renowned legacy of the Bateman family dynasty following the brief partnership between Peter and his brother Jonathan, which ended with Jonathan’s death in 1791. Breaking gender norms and business traditions, Peter recognized his sister-in-law Ann’s design skills and formed a new business partnership with her, working side-by-side through the 1790s, specializing in exquisite Neoclassical domestic silver, characterized by elegant oval forms, reeded borders, and fine bright-cut engraving. The partnership expanded in 1800 when Ann’s son William joined them, continuing a generational craft that remains highly prized by collectors today.
