Antique Pair of Pompeian Bronze Company Scaredy Cats Bookends. Bronze-clad pieces display a cat with an arched cat and a tail raised vertically in fright, one of their quintessential (but now sadly rare) designs. Marked on the base. Felt on the underside.

In 1889 Paul Mori founded the Galvano Bronze Company in Brooklyn, New York, which pioneered bronze electroplating for commercial use. The company had difficulty recovering from scarce resources during World War I, and was briefly closed in the early 1920s before it was purchased by Peter Manfredi and other employees and reopened as The Pompeian Bronze Company. Their high-quality bronze-clad bookends, lamps, and art objects became extremely popular during the Art Deco period, often collaborating with artists like Paul Herzel on literary and holiday-themed items. Their revival was short-lived, however, as the Great Depression was the final nail in their coffin, but some of their molds and plating tanks were acquired by the Marion Bronze Company and used for many years thereafter.
