Signed "Nairne Cornhill London", Nairne upper case block lettering with serifs, Cornhill lower case cursiver italic script and London in upper case block lettering italic with serifs. Red Honduran mahogany barrel in nigh pristine condition. Barrel is split and has been professionally repaired. OG and drawsleeve flanges pinned and secure. Drawsleeves in excellent condition, slight sag but nothing detrimental. Drawtubes withdraw feely and have no dents or scratches. Replacement OG cap. Original eyecup with eyewink. 4-lens Schyrle-Huygens eyepiece. Optically & mechanically sound. Image crisp and clear from edge to edge and snaps into sharp focus. Note the pale cyan caste to the crown element of the object glass. Indicative of its great age. At the time optical crown glass could not be made. All crown glass had iron contamination. This does not affect the image. Clear aperture 2-inches. Magnification x30 FoV 1°. Drawtubes and rear flange are engraved with reverse assembly arrows, and air escape holes. Edward Nairne was an illustrious Optical & Mathematical Instrument maker whose business flourished from 1749-1806. At the time he made this field telescope his firm operated at 20 Cornhill opposite the Royal Exchange, London, at the Sign of the Golden Spectacles.
