Antique Indian Metal Air Vent Cover as Shiva Hindu Mukhalinga. Thin metal hand-hammered and formed, with the residue of a label on the bottom back edge. 

Size: 5 1/2 x 3 x 1 in. 

Traditionally, Mukhalingas are used as wall coverings to give an iconic face or form to the abstract Shiva lingam. The mask typically displays the third eye of Shiva on the forehead, a crescent moon (though not clearly visible here), and a crown. These items are often made of brass, silver, or other metal alloys and are valued as collectibles. This specific item is likely from the 19th Century, originating from the Maharashtra region of Western India, and was used to cover air vents deep within a temple or palatial home, evidenced by the holes it the ears for attaching it to the walls and the four openings on the nose in center for air flow.
