The Grueby Faience Company, founded in 1894 in Revere, Massachusetts by William Henry Grueby, was a leading American ceramics firm during the Arts and Crafts Movement, known for its distinctive matte-glazed art pottery vases and tiles inspired by French and Japanese ceramics. Joined early on by architect-designer William Graves and designer George Prentiss Kendrick, the company produced glazed architectural terra cotta and faience tiles, introducing signature matte glazes, including an iconic cucumber green, by 1897. Grueby’s work earned multiple international awards, including at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris and the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, and their tiles and lamp bases were used by figures like Gustav Stickley and Tiffany & Co. Despite success, leadership changes, competition, and financial difficulties led to bankruptcy in 1909, limited production until 1911, and a devastating fire in 1913; the company’s assets were acquired by C. Pardee Works in 1917, and the Massachusetts facility closed permanently in 1920.
