Known globally as the “City of Blades,” Solingen, Germany established its metalworking roots in the late Middle Ages thanks to abundant local iron ore, dense forests for charcoal, and the swift-flowing River Wupper that powered watermills. By the 14th Century local blacksmiths formed strict craft guilds and began producing world-renowned swords and daggers stamped with the prestigious “Me fecit Solingen” quality mark. As warfare evolved into the early modern era, artisans shifted their mastery from weaponry toward kitchen cutlery, scissors, and razors, giving rise to legendary manufacturers like Zwilling J.A. Henckels and Wüsthof. The 19th Century brought industrialization, yet local manufacturers successfully balanced mechanized production with meticulous hand-finishing techniques to preserve their high standards. To protect this legacy from counterfeits, the German government passed the “Solingen Decree” in 1938, granting the city a legally protected designation of origin that strictly limits the name to blades manufactured entirely within its boundaries, and to this day any products from any company in the city are obligated to adhere to quality standards pursuant to the German Institute of Standardization (DIN). Today, Solingen remains the undisputed capital of German cutlery, exporting premium kitchen knives and specialized steel tools to culinary professionals and collectors worldwide.
