In 1853, the miller Daniel Straub joined forces with brothers Louis and Friedrich Schweizer to form the “Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer” in Geislingen, Germany. As early as 1862, the young company distinguished itself by winning a gold medal at the World Exhibition in London. In 1866, following the departure of the brothers, the company was renamed Straub & Son. The company showroom, built in 1868 in Berlin, gradually evolved to become the company’s first retail outlet. Three years later, the company was already employing 60 workers. By 1880, the number of employees had grown to approximately 200 and the company was already producing 960 different items, and upon merging with Ritter & Co. from Esslingen the name changed to “Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik.” In 1892 they developed a special technique for silver plating cutlery, making it so the parts of cutlery most exposed to wear and tear were coated twice as thick as elsewhere. This process was patented, and is still in use today, known as “Perfect Hard Silver Plating.” By 1900 the factory employed 3,000 workers, with an additional thousand joining over the next decade. This is the period when Art Nouveau became prevalent in their designs, particularly under the direction of Albert Mayer. Two successive world wars decimated the company, but in the aftermath subsidiaries of the company were created in the US, Holland, Canada, and Italy. The ostrich hallmark created by the original founder Straub faded from use by 1914, but the company continues to produce cookware today, employing over 5,000 workers.
Patina throughout.
