Antique George III Sheraton Style Mahogany Dining Chair. Features a distinctive fretwork splat design in the middle back and a geometric vanilla bean style upholstered seat, held to the wood by a gilt brass bead border. Signs of repair to the underside, and scuff-preventive material added to the bottoms of the straight front oval feet, though not the curved square back feet.

The Georgian era (1714-c. 1837) in British history, named for the Hanoverian kings George I-IV, encompassed the Regency period during George IV’s time as Prince of Wales and preceded the Victorian era, which shifted toward romanticism and mysticism. Influenced by renewed interest in classical Greek and Roman art and the importation of mahogany, Georgian style is best known in architecture and furniture, with Palladian designs by William Kent featuring large, gilded pieces with cabriole legs for country homes and palaces. Early 18th Century furniture drew on Dutch and French fashions using walnut, later supplanted by mahogany from the West Indies. Georgian furniture remains highly collectible today, with makers such as Thomas Chippendale, George Hepplewhite, and Thomas Sheraton commanding premium prices.
