Terracotta, meaning "cooked Earth" in Latin, is a type of art or functional earthenware object. A clay-based ceramic fired at low temperatures in a kiln, it is more fragile than other materials used for sculpture, but easier and faster to work with and can often be manipulated without a potter's wheel. The earliest known terracotta artwork was uncovered by archaeologists in excavations of Mohenjo-daro, Pakistan, dating from between 3000-1500 BC. Its distinctive red color and smooth finish has made it a favorite of many cultures for everything from roof tiles to toy figurines. This piece is a perfect example of its ability to withstand various weather conditions, as the growth on it has not diminished the lovingly carved details of the figure or the pedestal he rests upon.
