Antique Floral Hand Hooked Wool Rug. Disintegrating cotton-canvas backing. Large repeating floral patterns in the border and field. 

Size: 34 1/2 x 57 1/2 in. 

A hooked rug is a handmade textile made by pulling loops of fabric or yarn through a stiff woven foundation, such as burlap or linen. The technique forms a textured, looped-pile surface, and the resulting rugs are popular for their durability, rustic charm, and folk-art aesthetic. Both hand-hooking and machine-hooking are popular, and likely originated in England in the early 19th Century, but developed into its modern form along the Eastern United States and Canada in the late 19th Century. The craft eventually shifted from a necessity due to poverty into a lucrative and appreciated industry once mid century modern artisans in Denmark and elsewhere took it up in the early 1940s.
