Antique Eastlake Dual Cast Iron Wall Mounted Oil Lamps with Mercury Reflectors. This is a unique variant of the form, as many were made as a separated pair that could be placed in different parts of the room while these are connected in the middle. The reflectors, oil reservoirs, and lamp glasses are all in incredible shape, with an original patina on the faded gilt iron.
Size: 20 x 19 x 10 in.
The Eastlake Movement was a late 19th Century architectural and household design reform movement, and although it was started by the British architect and writer Charles Eastlake (1836-1906), it was essentially a North American phenomenon. The movement is generally considered part of the late Victorian period in terms of broad antique furniture designations, but is not as well known outside of collector’s circles due to the fact that Eastlake himself never built furniture, simply designing them for professional cabinetmakers instead, and in architecture the Eastlake style is considered a subcategory of the Queen Anne style rather than its own distinct period. Primary utilized from the 1870s through the late 1890s following the release of his influential book “Hints on Household Taste in Furniture, Upholstery and Other Details” in 1868, Eastlake used his experience as a painter who trained in Rome to expound on the importance of easy-to-clean, functional, simple elements and materials, with a unique philosophy that furniture should not only be good looking to people for their homes but “only made if the work be enjoyed by the manufacturers themselves.” He also insisted on making styles for the newly emerging middle class, which allowed many elements to live on past his demise, particularly throughout the concurrently developing American West Coast.
