The taverns of Europe began to develop in France in the second half of the 14th Century, as the population was recovering from the Black Death. The word itself derives from the Latin “taberna” whose original meaning was a shed, workshop, stall, or pub. As their popularity grew, an entire culture evolved around them, which eventually spread to the Americas and the Near East. A trattoria is an Italian eating establishment, generally much less formal than a ristorante (restaurant) but more formal than an osteria. While modern trattorias, tavernas, and taverns are often dining-only establishments, their original intent was as a place to bed down for the night during a journey, or even to conduct business in as a neutral location. This table, rustic as it is, clearly shows the love and care that went into it, with a well-worn top, hand-shaped legs, and a removable drawer to keep items inside, indicating it was likely in a bedroom or living space rather than a dining hall.
