Old plate cameras are early photographic devices that used glass or metal plates coated with light-sensitive emulsions to capture images, predating the widespread use of film. Popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, these cameras typically featured a bellows design for focusing, a ground glass screen for composing the image, and a wooden or metal body. The photographer would insert a prepared plate into the camera and expose it manually, requiring precise handling and long exposure times. Despite their complexity and bulk, plate cameras produced exceptionally detailed and high-resolution images, making them favored tools for studio portraits, landscapes, and scientific documentation. Today, they are valued as both historical artifacts and instruments of fine art photography.
