Antique Chinese Porcelain Spouted Ewer. Hand painted porcelain ewer with white glaze ground and cobalt foliage decoration and rim accents.

Ewers are elegant, often elaborately decorated vessels traditionally used for holding and pouring liquids such as water or wine, characterized by a wide spout, a single handle, and a graceful, often elongated form. Originating in ancient times, ewers were used in both domestic and ceremonial contexts across many cultures, including Roman, Islamic, Chinese, and European traditions. In medieval and Renaissance Europe, ewers were paired with basins in handwashing rituals for nobility and clergy, and were often made of precious metals like silver or bronze. In decorative arts, ceramic or porcelain ewers became canvases for intricate painting, gilding, and sculptural embellishment, especially during the Baroque and Rococo periods. Whether functional or ornamental, ewers are admired today for their harmonious proportions and as enduring symbols of refinement, hospitality, and ritual.
