The Chinese luohan (also known as the chuang), although used similarly to a daybed, is distinguished as a couch bed by railings, which render it as a more formal piece of furniture. Appearing in antiquity, the box-style platform developed into a more sophisticated open-structured, corner-leg form, and the appearance of railings may be related to the early placement of screen panels around the back and sides of the platform, which enhanced the sitter as well as providing privacy and protection from drafts. They reached the height of their popularity by the end of the Ming period, and are still made today with a variety of decorative designs, depending on their origin and purpose.
