The Venning family of silversmiths, including William Norris Venning and J.H. Venning, operated prominent workshops in Saint John, New Brunswick, during the 19th Century. Active primarily from the 1850s through the 1870s, William Norris Venning established a well-known firm on King Street where he worked as a watchmaker, goldsmith, and silversmith. The artisans of this family specialized in crafting fine silver items, jewelry, and cutlery to serve the growing elite of Atlantic Canada. In keeping with regional traditions of the era, their pieces were often stamped with unique maker’s marks alongside English-style pseudo-hallmarks. Today, surviving examples of Venning silver are treasured by collectors and museums as rare and authentic representations of mid-19th Century Canadian craftsmanship.
