Fireplace fenders, or frets, are low metal frames set in front of an open fireplace to contain ashes, embers, and soot. They are usually one solid piece, and accompany andirons and fire screens to both accessorize and safeguard the process of burning a fire indoors. Before the Renaissance, fenders were made entirely of iron and of plain design. From the Renaissance onwards the front of the fender could be cast in different metals, such as bronze, silver, or brass, like this piece. Casting in these materials allowed artisans to give them ornate designs and style. During the 18th Century fireplaces began to have built-in metal grates to hold the firewood or coal up off the floor and in place, thus limiting the need for fenders. Nowadays they are rarely made, and are almost exclusively for decorative purposes, except in older homes and buildings with fireplaces that have not been updated or are made to fit a certain period style. This fender is likely from the late 19th or early 20th Century, based on the design and the condition.
