The image of the Buddha with Mucalinda, the serpent king, is a powerful motif in Buddhist art that symbolizes protection, serenity, and the triumph of enlightenment over adversity. According to tradition, shortly after his awakening, the Buddha was meditating beneath the Bodhi tree when a great storm arose. Mucalinda emerged from the earth, coiling his body to form a seat and spreading his multi-hooded cobra head above the Buddha to shield him from wind and rain. This depiction emphasizes the harmony between nature and spiritual awakening, as well as the reverence that even powerful beings of the natural and mythic world show toward the Buddha.
