Arthur J. Stone (1847-1938) was an English-born artisan widely recognized as the master silversmith of the American Arts and Crafts movement. After training in Sheffield and Edinburgh, he immigrated to the United States in 1884 and eventually established his renowned workshop in Gardner, Massachusetts, in 1901. Stone was celebrated for his devotion to traditional hand-hammered techniques, graceful chasing, and clean geometric forms, earning him the title “Dean of American Silversmiths.” Notably, he operated a collaborative Guild-style shop where he permitted his master craftsmen to stamp their own initials alongside his mark on completed holloware and flatware. A few years prior to his death he sold the enterprise to Henry Heywood, who briefly renamed it The Stone Silver Shop before changing it to Stone Associates in 1937, and when the company went out of business in 1957 his mark was sold to Ernest W. Lehtonen, who continued to use it on flatware for several decades before retiring it for good.
