Antique Amethyst Glass Vase Likely New England Glass Factory or Sandwich Glass Factory. Extremely rare color and form. This amethyst glass vase is a pressed "Four-Printie Block" pattern, likely produced by the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company around 1840-1860.

The Boston and Sandwich Glass Company was an American manufacturer that operated in Sandwich, Massachusetts, from 1826 to 1888. Founded under the leadership of Deming Jarves, the company expanded from a small operation with 60 employees into a massive enterprise employing 500 workers. The factory stood out as one of the earliest to produce pressed glass, successfully perfecting a pressing mold machine originally invented at a rival firm. During the 1830s, the company experimented with colored glass, later incorporating specialized art glass production after hiring artisan Nicholas Lutz in 1869. Jarves successfully led the company to great prosperity until 1858, when a dispute with the board of directors prompted him to leave and start a competing business. The enterprise ultimately collapsed in 1888 due to stiff competition from cheaper Midwestern manufacturers and a management lockout triggered by a glassmakers' labor union dispute.
