A pie safe, also known as a kitchen safe or pie cupboard, was a common household item in 19th Century America, designed to store baked goods and perishable foods before refrigeration was available. The most distinctive feature of pie safes is their ventilated doors, often made with punched tin panels featuring decorative patterns. These panels allowed air circulation to keep food fresh while protecting it from insects and rodents. Some pie safes also had intricate designs on the tin, such as flowers, stars, or geometric patterns, making them both functional and decorative.
