The spindle-back Windsor armchair originated in rural England in the early 1700s, gaining its name from the market town of Windsor where it was distributed. Legend has it that King George I (or possibly George II) took shelter in a peasant’s cottage during a storm, sat in a rustic stick chair, and was so impressed he ordered similar ones for Windsor Castle. Distinguished by splayed legs and tapered spindles inserted directly into a solid, carved wooden seat, it became a global favorite for its lightweight, durable, and ergonomic design. Immigrants brought the design to the American colonies as early as the 1730s, where craftsmen, particularly in Pennsylvania, adapted the style by using native woods like pine and maple and eliminating the central back splat for a lighter, sleeker appearance. The rise of steam-bent wood and lathe-turned spindles in the 19th Century led to mass production in the Thames Valley and Lincolnshire, shifting the chair from exclusive estate garden seating to affordable household furniture for the middle class.
