In 1835 Robert Wallace (1815-1892), the son of Scottish immigrant silversmiths, founded R. Wallace & Sons in Wallingford, Connecticut. Having apprenticed for the Meriden Britannia Company, he sought to develop his own brand, first focusing only on spoons. By the time he died his company had roughly 600 employees, and his children went on to rename it twice, first to Wallace Brothers Silver Company in 1875 and finally Wallace Silversmiths in 1956. They were purchased by the Hamilton Watch Company in 1959, became a division of H.M.W. Industry in 1971, and eventually were sold to Syratech Corporation in 1986, who ended up as part of Lifetime Brands in 2006. Many of their early pieces have wound up in American museums, and Lifetime Brands continues to produce their sterling, silverplate, and stainless steel flatware to this day.
