Anne Worsham Richardson was born near Turbeville, South Carolina on October 12th, 1919. As a child she developed a love of flora and fauna that led her to study naturalism, and she began painting the many birds she catalogued in her teens. She became a celebrated ornithological artist after she and her husband opened the Birds View Gallery in Charleston, and received attention from numerous presidential collectors including Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and Ronald Reagan. She was the first female painter to receive the “Art Print of the Year” award, and the bird sanctuary she established was often the source of her inspiration, and continues to inspire other artists to this day. Since her death on September 2nd, 2012 her works have gained even more appreciation, particularly for their accuracy, whimsy, and for embodying the hurdles she overcame to make a place for herself in the art world in a time and area primarily dominated by male artists.
