Anne Thornhill was born in 1952 in England. Her earliest memories are of mixing colors together on small canvases her mother provided her with, taking to art quite naturally. Some of her earliest tutors were Tony Bartl, Peter Kinley, Frank Auerbach, and Adrian Heath. She trained in Fine Art at Lincoln College of Art and Bath Academy of Art, Corsham, England, graduating in 1974. That same year she married fellow artist Paul Blackwell, and since then she has worked full time as a painter alongside him. They first sold their work from the gallery they opened in Whitby, then another called Grosmont Gallery. In 1996 they sold the facility and moved to a quiet spot overlooking Esk Valley, setting up a home studio to take advantage of the country lifestyle. She works from drawings executed on site to retain a sense of place in her painting, which are usually in acrylics. Their studio is open to visitors, although they tend to shun the spotlight and prefer the privacy afforded them in a more remote location away from big city hubs, with endless interpretations of the landscape to occupy their time.
