Andy Smith (Born 1951) is a full-time North Carolina studio potter based in Marshville who has been crafting ceramics since 1983. He began his formal training in clay at Wingate College in 1976 and further refined his craft at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Working entirely independently without apprentices, Smith creates both wheel-thrown and slab-built vessels that balance structured classical forms with organic, altered contours. He specializes in raku and saggar atmospheric firing techniques, pairing unpredictable surface crackling and smoky effects with highly controlled, impressed geometric designs. Drawing creative inspiration from Art Deco geometry, architecture, and classic science fiction, his vessels feature vibrant color-blocked glazes alongside metallic and matte finishes. An exhibiting member of the Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild, Smith’s distinctive art pottery is represented in prominent galleries across the East Coast as well as the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
