André Brasilier (born October 29, 1929, in Saumur, France) is a celebrated French painter, printmaker, watercolorist, and ceramist known for his lyrical, dreamlike vision of nature. Raised in an artistic household—both his parents were painters—he enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1949 and went on to receive prestigious honors including the Prix Blumenthal (1952) and the Premier Grand Prix de Rome (1953), which led to his residency at the Villa Medici in Rome from 1954 to 1957. His work blends expressionism and abstraction, often inspired by Japanese prints, and features recurring motifs such as serene landscapes, horses, women (inspired by his muse and wife Chantal), musical instruments, and the sea—all rendered in soft, poetic palettes that evoke harmony between composition and emotion. Brasilier’s international exhibitions include retrospectives at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and the Museum Haus Ludwig in Germany, and he continues to live and work in Paris.
