Anderson Peynetsa was born on the Zuni Pueblo in New Mexico in 1964, and first began making pottery in 8th grade, becoming the star pupil of his high school teacher Jennie Laate, one of the originators of modern Zuni ceramic wares. He married fellow Zuni artisan Avelia (also born in 1964) while still in school, and ever since they have worked together, with him painting and her polishing, shaping the works together and signing their works with a double “A” mark. Since the late 1980s their traditional black-on-redware pieces as well as uniquely shaped pots, canteens, effigies, ollas and more have become world-famous, and they have won numerous prizes both individually and together, including from the Santa Fe Indian Market Show, the Eight Northern Indian Pueblo Shows, and the Museum of Northern Arizona.
