Greek Black-Glaze Pottery Vase.
Ca. 450 BC. A pottery vase with a black glazed surface. This vase, featuring a short, unglazed foot, a bulbous body adorned with vertical ribbing, two protruding handles on opposite sides of the shoulder, a short and wide flaring neck, and a decorative register of dots encircling the base of the neck, exemplifies the aesthetic and technical achievements of black glazed ceramics in ancient Greece. Black glazed ceramics held a significant place in the artistic and cultural traditions of ancient Greece. These vessels were primarily produced during the 6th and 5th centuries BC, a period known as the Late Archaic and Classical periods. The technique of black glazing involved firing the pottery in an oxidizing kiln, resulting in a lustrous black surface that offered a striking contrast to the red clay underneath.
