Anatole Krasnyansky (1930–2023) was a Ukrainian-born American artist and architect whose richly expressive work fused Eastern European architectural heritage with surreal, dream-inflected figuration. Born in Kyiv and trained in architectural restoration at the Kyiv State Art Institute and the Leningrad Academy of Art, he worked on significant national projects in the Soviet Union before emigrating with his family to the United States in 1975, where he initially found work as a scenic artist and set designer for major television and film studios including ABC, CBS, and Universal. In the U.S. he pursued fine art, developing a distinctive style that juxtaposed structured cityscapes with whimsical, masked figures, and pioneering innovative watercolor techniques that introduced texture and depth typically associated with oils. Krasnyansky’s work was exhibited internationally, featured alongside artists such as Marc Chagall and Diego Rivera, and represented for decades by Park West Gallery; he also lectured and engaged in public art projects, and his paintings are held in collections around the world.
